From the outside, a commercial ultrasonic dishwasher may look like a stainless-steel washing tank. Inside, however, a series of small components makes ultrasonic cleaning possible.

These components are called ultrasonic transducers.

What Is an Ultrasonic Transducer?

An ultrasonic transducer converts electrical energy into mechanical vibrations.

In an ultrasonic dishwasher, these vibrations are transmitted through the tank into the cleaning liquid. The transducers work together with the ultrasonic generator and other system components to create the conditions needed for ultrasonic cleaning.

Although they are relatively small, transducers play an important role in the machine’s operation.

How Do Ultrasonic Vibrations Help Clean Dishes?

Ultrasonic vibrations create rapid pressure changes in the cleaning liquid. Under suitable conditions, these changes produce tiny bubbles that form and collapse—a process known as cavitation.

This action helps loosen grease and food residue from surfaces immersed in the liquid.

Ultrasonic cleaning is not simply about making the water move. Its effectiveness depends on the complete system and the way it is used, including:

  • The design and operating condition of the ultrasonic system.

  • The cleaning solution and detergent.

  • The liquid temperature and cleaning time.

  • The type and amount of residue on the dishes.

  • How items are positioned in the tank.

3. What preparation and finishing steps are required?

Ask about removing food scraps, loading the tank, detergent use, rinsing and any required sanitising steps. Ultrasonic cleaning should not automatically be treated as a complete sanitising process.

4. What utilities and maintenance are needed?

Confirm the electrical supply, installation requirements, cleaning procedures and access to replacement components.
